From this week it will be compulsory for Victorians to wear face masks when they leave the house, and it really wouldn't hurt for the rest of us to do it too. While we are used to seeing plenty of people in Japan wear face masks every winter as cold and flu season hits, it's not so common in Australia and will take us all a bit of getting used to.
If you haven't managed to get hold of good disposable masks, or any of the great home sewn masks that are available, here is a great little tutorial for how to make a simple mask from a handkerchief.
Part two on how to make it better for those of us who have trouble with fogging glasses also has some great tips.
J Style's Japanese fabric squares are perfect for these DIY masks and handy to keep in your pocket for a quick emergency mask when you're out and about these days. I especially love the idea of using old stockings instead of hair ties because they are softer on your ears. Of course NO-ONE WILL KNOW you have old tights on your face...
